9:00 AM (AEDT) / 8:30 AM (ACDT) / 6:00 AM (AWST) - Solo Presentation: Melbourne Museum Extension: Design, Construction, and Operation with A.I.
What kind of a city is Melbourne?
How does technology help the architecture in the expansion of the Melbourne Museum?
Planning, execution, and operation of museums; architects in collaboration with all.
Whether renovation, expansion, new development, or conversion of other buildings to museums, the execution of a museum is a new prototype compared to what it was in the last century. Technology makes the key difference. Tabe Shouri presents through this project that today’s realm in museums’ architecture sides with “Collaborations” than with “-isms”. It establishes a proliferation of inputs from all parties in designing museums; from the board of advisers and executives to users, from consultants to authorities, and from space requirements to materials constraints. Today’s Museum Execution finds the joy in collaborative design and values in thinking together as precious alternatives for the traditional notion of authorship in architectural design and construction. Today, openness at entries replaces the traditional conservative approaches in admission with security gates and control kiosks. Today, Museums are executed to welcome people. Today, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is used to create live composite models in design to be used in the construction and maintenance of museum buildings bringing mistakes, change orders, time and budget revisions, errors, and omissions close to zero. Net Zero Carbon Emission is considered in the design, construction, and operation of museums. AI applies the above principles and more in the “Deep Learnings” process in rethinking The Melbourne Museum and sets parameters to be explored in museums of the other cities.

11:00 AM - 11:20 AM (AEDT) - Utilising Large Projects to Increase Digital Literacy: A Case Study from HS2
Large projects, with larger teams, longer durations, increased resources, and often more extensive information management requirements, can provide great opportunities to improve the long-term digital literacy within organisations.
For large, multi-disciplinary teams these projects give BIM professionals the chance to re-enforce and build on knowledge of basic BIM principals in teams.
For BIM teams the increased information management requirements and BIM deliverables often create a short-term need for additional BIM staff. Where this need is met by placing an experienced professional for another discipline into their first BIM role the project can often be a positive learning environment to train staff in BIM requirements and ensure they stay within the BIM team after the project is finished.
This presentation will cover how digital literacy within in Arcadis was increased through the HS2 project, both within the UK Infrastructure Sector and in experienced professionals that took on their first BIM role, and the lessons learnt that can be applied on other large projects. These strategies will enable BIM professionals to increase the longer-term BIM maturity within their organisations while meeting short-term project goals.

9:00 AM (AEDT) / 7:30 AM (ACDT) / 6:00 AM (AWST) - PANEL DISCUSSION: Delivering on Net Zero Emissions in Australian Infrastructure & Construction
Over the next three years (2021 to 2024) it is expected that around 166 billion will be spent by governments in Australia on infrastructure. Along with this investment, Australian state and territory governments have committed to net zero carbon by 2050 to address climate change risks identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). All have set further intermediate 2030 benchmarks to drive action over the next decade.
Australia’s infrastructure industry is strongly placed to help enable this transition because of its role in shaping societies and economies, and through its unique position to influence emissions reductions, leverage investment, and respond to policy incentives from government, proponents, and asset owners.
This Panel discussion hosted by Sumit Oberoi will first share an industry report on how industry in collaboration can accelerate the delivery a net zero future through the design and construction of the Australian infrastructure pipeline. Drawing upon experts the panel will discuss how a systems-based approach across an asset lifecycle is required to accelerate the journey to net zero emissions in Australian infrastructure.

12:40PM - 1:40PM PANEL DISCUSSION: BUILDING TRANSPARENCY IN TODAY’S CONSTRUCTION SUPPLY CHAIN THROUGH DIGITISATION
The lack of visibility in construction has been a challenge for every stakeholder on the supply chain. It causes massive gaps in communication, tracking and reporting and in turn creates a loss of trust, time, and money.
Properly tracked materials can lead to massive increases in transparency for everyone involved in a build. But material tracking has been done (pretty poorly) for so long. Why hasn’t it changed?
In this panel discussion, we’re talking about how companies are radically trying to change the way they track materials and provide transparency along their supply chains. As every stakeholder has its own set of challenges to increase visibility, we’ll discuss how implementing powerful digital solutions can enable different stakeholders at every point of the supply chain to achieve that transparency. While still being able to keep control of their data and processes.
Listen to see how some of the most innovative people in Australia’s construction industry are tackling this problem and why being transparent in the construction industry matters.

12:00PM - 12:20PM THE LOOMING REPORTING REALITIES OF MODERN SLAVERY LEGISLATION - NO ONE IS EXEMPT
David Baggs and Global GreenTag have been preparing for some time to meet the realities that Modern Slavery reporting will demand - at a product level. Removing the dark side of supply chains is the ultimate goal and David strongly advises forward planning by construction industry operators to prepare for accountability.
Although companies (companies or groups with a group earning annually over $50 million with even one employee in NSW) will be the first required under NSW legislation to declare and report what is happening in their product supply lines, it will only be a matter of time before these companies require downline companies to provide critical information.
Understand what Modern Slavery actually is - and where it is occurring and feeds into the construction industry.
Look at some typical Modern Slavery issues in product supply chains to compare where your company might be positioned, in relation to Modern Slavery impacts.
Explore some ways to analyse where your products are coming from and support systems that exist to help you stay clean.
Examine measures that some companies and industry groups are already implementing to help eradicate Modern Slavery practices.
Be clear about the Modern Slavery Acts (Federal and NSW).
Understand the tools that are available to assist compliance.

10:30am - 11:20am Modernizing Project Controls for the Digital Era
When collaborating for project success, project teams want to focus their attention on successfully executing work, not pushing and recreating data across multiple systems and groups. While technology and new methods, such as building information modeling (BIM) and Lean construction, are advancing physical efficiency, some of the tools and systems used to execute projects have not kept pace. The level of effort needed to interpret and report on data increases significantly as projects grow. Teams are burdened with the never-ending task of collecting, feeding, and maintaining cost data in outdated systems that do not support the extensive requirements for team collaboration. To successfully deliver a project, collaboration is key.
When scouring a business for potential efficiency gains, no area can be off limits. In an industry where even small changes translate into big savings, no stone can be left unturned. Complexity is growing across all areas of construction. Aligning field and office workers, sharing information with external and dispersed teams, interpreting vast amounts of data, and making rapid decisions—these all require new ways of thinking and working to be successful. The legacy systems and spreadsheets used throughout the years to manage projects do not allow contractors to operate with needed levels of productivity, transparency, or control. This can impact project delivery success— and limit organizations’ ability to adapt quickly and grow in today’s market.

12:30PM - 1:20PM The Accelerating Development of Machine Learning in Construction
We’re only beginning to scratch the surface of machine learning driven possibilities in the construction and engineering industry. As smartification drives datafication; AI driven transformation will naturally happen as companies begin to question how they leverage all the data that they have. The cost of machine learning is already decreasing with infrastructure that leverages pay-as-you-go models in the cloud.
New tools are helping democratise machine learning to the non-data scientists by way of drag-drop modelling, visualising predictions and simplifying the creation of easy to consume insights. Digitisation is going to (and in some cases, already is) disrupt every part of the supply chain and this is creating data that can change how built assets are delivered in the future. As processes get digitised for improving productivity, the data that these systems generate will drive a paradigm shift in the process itself.
Schedule delays being predicted as soon as a project is planned based on historical data for proactive delay management
Risks can be identified and mitigated through machine powered recommendations before they become an issue
Sub-contractors can be dynamically selected based on their historical performance and the type of job being done
Change requests and variations can be predicted well in advance to ensure minimum disruption
Work sites can be made safer by completely eliminating work site HSE incidents.

Panel Discussion: Designing with Country
The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment has signalled a shift in focus to promote the value of Aboriginal knowledge in shaping development across Sydney by releasing a draft framework document.
How do we incorporate traditional knowledge systems into the design and delivery of the built environment…?
How do we examine ‘kinship structures’ that add depth and richness to the built environment….?
How do we ‘design with country’ as a processes to Aboriginal lore as a way to understanding and celebrating ‘the unique belief systems that connect people physically and spiritually to Country/Place’…?
Old Ways, New
Country Centred Design is our methodology which applies Indigenous design principles to the development of places, spaces and experiences. Our process incorporates the most aligned elements of systems thinking, regenerative design, design thinking, UX and interaction design and futuring techniques - to deliver, culturally, socially and environmentally sustainability.
Bangawarra
A Sydney art and architecture collective that challenges colonial spatial practices, by listening-to, valuing and respecting tens-of-millennia of unbroken ancestral knowledge and culture in this place. We provide site-specific Aboriginal knowledges, language and cultural consultancy and work with clients to reveal its relevance to spatial design and planning, including Designing with Country.
